Always Do Your Best
And whatsoever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by Him. Colossians 3:17
What is my relationship to how well I do, whatever I do?
Too often, Christians forget that true worship is doing your best at whatever you do. Worship is the entire attitude of one’s life or being in relationship to God the Creator.
“Worship extends to every domain of life. God must be served on all planes of human existence, as biblical legislation testifies. It is significant that Hebrew has one word to denote work, service and worship. In biblical thought there is no watertight division between daily work and the adoration of God. In the very first page of Scripture manual activity and the service of the Creator are inseparably linked.” R. Martin Achard
Worship is doing everything in the name of Jesus, and giving God thanks for it.
“And whatsoever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men.” Colossians 3:23
1 Peter 4:11 That God in all things may be glorified.
It is not true that we meet here this morning to glorify God, and that tomorrow morning we’re then going to go out and doing something else. As a Christian, everything that we do is done to glorify God.
Whether therefore you eat, or drink, or whatsoever you do, do all to the glory of God. 1 Corinthians 10:31
You and I, as professing Christians, have no right to do anything that does not glorify God.
People say, I don’t believe in mixing real life and religion. That is crazy; we are supposed to put our faith in everything we do. If what we do cannot be to bring glory to God, then we probably have no business doing it.
As a Christian, what you are to do on Monday morning is to be a worship offering: even the secular becomes sanctified, and the everyday becomes edified.
As a Christian, there is no ground that is not holy ground, and no time that is not sacred time.
This is a Guide to My Relationship with Anything I Consider Doing
And whatsoever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by Him. Colossians 3:17
My actions must be consistent with the character of Christ.
The word name reflects “character” in the Bible. The name of God and the character of God are inseparably linked. It is like asking, is what I’m about to do reflect God’s love and His provision of salvation?
The principle is this: Would Jesus say or do what I am doing or saying? We must ask, does this fit with the character of Jesus? To do something in the name of Jesus means that Jesus would approve of it.
My Actions Must Be Supported by the Authority of Christ
When a person puts his name on something, he’s actually putting his authority behind it.
John 14:14 Jesus said, If you shall ask any thing in My name, I will do it.
When we bring His name into it, then He does it. God never expected us to do anything for Him, but He wants us to do something through Him. It means we should not do anything that Jesus couldn’t sign His own name to.
My Actions Must Bring Glory to Jesus
When something is done in the name of someone, in the name of, means, for that person’s praise or glory.
And whatsoever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men. Colossians 3:23
As a Christian believer, nothing is excluded out of that. Everything that I am to do, I am to do with His approval, with His authority, and for His acclaim. That means that you’re not to be a clock watcher, just getting by. You are to serve the Lord heartily. The reputation of Jesus is at stake.
Students, you ought to do your homework for Jesus, not for the teacher, and not even for Mom or Dad.
Why should your parents believe in your Christianity and maturity if you cannot even keep your room clean? It is a sin for a Christian to do less than his/her best.
When we go out to work or travel tomorrow, or stay at home for the holiday and fellowship, whether we’re moms, dads, kids, or employees, we’re to do it honestly, and we’re to do it heartily, as to the Lord!
