Dad, Where Are You Leading Us?

Dad, Where Are You Leading Us?

Lot Chose The Easy Place

Genesis 13:11a Then Lot chose for himself all the plain of Jordan; and Lot journeyed east… 12b …and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain, and pitched his tent toward Sodom.

The Jordan area was easier to live in with water, etc. Abraham went to the desert, the more difficult area.

You must be careful with your choices.

You look toward Sodom, and before long you are living in it.

Lot Chose A Wicked Place

Genesis 13:13 But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly.

Genesis 18:20 And the LORD said, “Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous, 21 I will go down now and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which has come unto Me; and if not, I will know.” 22 And the men turned their faces from there, and went toward Sodom; but Abraham stood yet before the LORD.

We must be very careful.

We gravitate toward what lures us and we end up where we belong. ~Vance Havner

Lot Chose To Remain In A Wicked Place

Lot started out near Sodom, then moved in it, and remained there for years. Between Genesis 13 and Genesis 19, many years passed.

Abraham had to rescue Lot once, and yet he still remained with his family in a very wicked environment.

God Allows Repentance Before He Condemns

Genesis 18:20 And the LORD said, “Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous, 21 I will go down now and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which has come unto Me; and if not, I will know.”
Genesis 18:32 And he said, “Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak yet but this once: Perhaps ten shall be found there.” And He said, “I will not destroy it for ten’s sake.”

Abraham was counting on the influence of Lot on his ten member family when he asked God to spare the city for ten righteous people.

Lot Has No Influence On His Neighbors

Genesis 19:5 And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, “Where are the men which came in to thee this night? Bring them out unto us, that we may know them. 19:7 And said, I pray you, brethren, do not so wickedly.

The people of Sodom were seeking to do evil to the guests of Lot, and he could not influence them otherwise.

Lot Has No Influence on His Family

Genesis 18:32b And God said, “I will not destroy it for ten’s sake.”

Abraham was counting on the influence of Lot on his ten member family when he asked God to spare the city for ten righteous people.

Genesis 19:12 And the men said unto Lot, Hast thou here any besides? Sons-in-law, and thy sons, and thy daughters, and whatsoever thou hast in the city, bring them out of this place: 19:14 And Lot went out and spoke unto his sons-in-law, who married his daughters, and said, “Up, get ye out of this place; for the LORD will destroy this city!” But he seemed as one who mocked unto his sons-in-law.

Lot’s own family did not take him seriously; they laughed at him.

Lot Led His Family To Destruction

Genesis 19:15 And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, “Arise, take thy wife and thy two daughters who are here, lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city.” 16 And while he lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the LORD being merciful unto him: and they brought him forth, and set him without the city.

Lot’s family was swayed by their environment. It was the place where he had led them and allowed
them to remain. They chose the way of that environment, and it led to their destruction.

Dad’s! With the power and guidance of Jesus, let’s lovingly lead our families away from the things that will destroy them.
