Mary’s Little Lamb
Micah 5:2 “But thou, Bethlehem though you are little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of you shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from old, from everlasting.”
How appropriate that Mary’s Lamb would be born in Bethlehem. For centuries the Jewish priests had been raising Passover lambs in Bethlehem. It was there where God’s perfect Lamb, the Lord Jesus, was born. He was born in a stable, and how fitting that a sacrificial Lamb would be born in a stable.
The Passover Lamb
Jesus in The Old Testament
They’re slaves in Egypt and God is going to deliver them; and He is going to use a Lamb to do it.
Exodus 12:7 And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it. 12:13 When I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be on you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt.
Getting rid of sin in the Bible is done by the smearing or application of blood, the symbol of God’s “pardoning” of humanity through death and the consequent “reconciliation of humanity with God.” The picture of a bloody sacrifice is not very appealing to the contemporary world.
This Lamb Was Special
Exodus 12: 5-6: Your lamb shall be without blemish… 1 Peter 1:19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:
Jesus the lamb was sinless. Why was He sinless? So He could make a blood atonement. Remember the Bible says it is the blood that makes atonement for your sin.
Leviticus 17:11 For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you on the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that makes an atonement for the soul.
The blood that flowed through the veins of Mary’s Lamb was the very blood of God.
Paul told the pastors of the church in Ephesus this: “feed the church of God, which he has purchased with His own blood.” Acts 20:28 It was God’s blood that was shed on the cross.
The Lamb Was Sinless
The Passover lambs, being raised by the priests in the fields of Bethlehem, were out there when Jesus was born. And over here is born Mary’s Lamb, a sinless man, who will be examined by the Sadducees and the Pharisees and the Herodians and the scribes and the Roman officers. They were trying to find some fault in the Lord Jesus. But Pilate had to confess, “I find no fault in him.” John 19:4, 6 He was the perfect Lamb.
The Lamb Was Slain
Exodus 12:6 And the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening.
The Lamb Could Save
Exodus 12:12 And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt.
The Lamb Was Shared
Exodus 12:8 “And they shall eat the flesh in that night, roast with fire, and unleavened bread; and with bitter herbs they shall eat it.” It “is Christ in you, the hope of glory.” Colossian s 1:27
It is Christ that gives you your strength.
This is the very thing that happens when we come to the Lord’s Supper. 1 Corinthians 11:23–25. Jesus is our Passover Lamb.
The Lamb in Victory
The Apostle John is caught up into heaven. He wept much, because no man was found worthy to open and to read the book. “And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts stood a Lamb as it had been slain, and took the book out of the right hand of him that sat upon the throne.” Revelation 5:1–7
John Saw a Slain Lamb
Revelation 5:6: “And in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain.” This Lamb still bears the marks of the nails, and He will forever bear the marks of the nails.
John Saw a Standing Lamb
There “stood a Lamb.” He laid down in death in a grave, but the grave could not hold Him, and He is now standing, making intercession for us. It speaks of the resurrection of Jesus the Lamb of God.
John Saw a Sovereign Lamb
“And he came…” The Lamb came, “and took the book out of the right hand of him that sat upon the throne.” Revelation 5:7
Jesus the Lamb had the right to take the book, for He had made it all. He had the right of Calvary: He died, He shed His blood for it. He had the conquest, He was raised from the dead, and has the right to take this book and to open it. For He is the great I AM.” I AM was born a lamb. Mary’s Lamb was the sovereign God.
John Saw The Lamb in Majesty
Revelation 5:9 And they sung a new song, saying, “You are worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for You were slain, and have redeemed us to God by your blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation.”
Revelation 5:8–12 Amen.
