Samuel Had A Godly Mother
Samuel Had A Godly Mother
A Godly Woman and Life Circumstances
Hannah was living in a time much like ours. It was a time of turmoil, confusion, spiritual degeneracy, corrupt religion, and moral desecration in the church. It was a sad and tragic hour in Israel’s history.
1 Samuel 1:2 And he had two wives: the name of the one was Hannah, and the name of the other Peninnah. And Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children.
One husband and two wives. In Hanna’s day, polygamy was a part of culture, but it was never intended by God, nor was it best. Every time it appears in the Bible it brings about heartache, pain, agony and judgment. Still, God was patient in overturning the culture.
A Godly Woman and An Imperfect Husband
1 Samuel 1:3 And this man went up out of his city yearly to worship and to sacrifice unto the LORD of hosts in Shiloh.
A godly woman can still flourish, even with an imperfect husband.
In Hannah’s situation, her husband appears to be committed to God: he worships, but has not overcome the two wife culture.
No one has any excuse for not being what God wants them to be, regardless of the actions of those in their families or society.
A Godly Woman In A Hostile Environment
1 Samuel 1:6 And her adversary also provoked her sorely to make her fret, because the LORD had shut up her womb.
The second wife harassed her because she had no children. For many women, even in our day and time, it is a heartache if they are unable to have children. But in their society, the grief was magnified further by faulty understanding, judgment, and rejection of women who had not been blessed with children.
A Godly Woman Deals With Problems
She prayed to God, Who alone could help her, and she prays for God’s best.
1 Samuel 1:10 And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed unto the LORD and wept sorely.
A Godly Woman Commits Her Child To God
Hannah saw God’s best for a woman was to have children, and that is how she prayed. It is God’s plan that women effect society toward God by virtue of bearing godly seed.
As a godly woman, she presents her future child to God. That child is a heritage from the Lord. He is not hers, but is a treasure which she manages for His glory. He is a godly seed from which she will influence society from the bottom up.
When godly women raise godly children they affect society in a way they never could as president, or in any other way. She did not want a child just to show off to everybody. She wanted a child to give to God, because she recognized that a child was a token of His blessing.
A Godly Woman Is Misunderstood
1 Samuel 1:13 Now Hannah, she spoke in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard: therefore Eli thought she was drunk.
Most people do not have any discernment concerning a Godly person, woman or man, and this preacher did not, either.
A Godly Mother Raises Her Child
1 Samuel 1:22 But Hannah went not up; for she said unto her husband, “I will not go up until the child is weaned, and then I will bring him, that he may appear before the LORD and there abide for ever.”
Sometimes the greatest act of worship a mother can offer God is to care for the life He gave her.
A Godly Mother Gives Her Children To God
1 Samuel 1:28 “Therefore also I have lent him to the LORD; as long as he lives he shall be lent to the LORD.” And he worshipped the LORD there. 19 Moreover his mother made him a little coat, and brought it to him from year to year when she came up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice.
A Godly Mother Influences From Ground Up
1 Samuel 3:20 And all Israel from Dan even to Beersheba knew that Samuel was confirmed as a prophet of the LORD. Samuel the prophet was sent to correct the King of Israel.
A man influences society from the top down and a woman influences society from the bottom up. The two come together to create that godly society that God has so beautifully and purposely designed.
