Sunday evening Greg, John & Kevin Whitaker gave a presentation of their recent mission trips to Peru and Nicaragua while we enjoyed numerous delicious desserts!
Greg and John showed us pictures and short video clips of the medical mission to Peru. They were among a team of dentists and dental students to provide dental work to villagers along the Amazon river. They also had a gracious missionary with them who provided a huge houseboat they used to travel up the Amazon, live on and carry all their equipment. They ministered spiritually and physically to the people in the villages, and even though it was exhausting work, they felt it was a time well spent for both them and the villagers.
Greg went on another mission trip with Kevin and his wife Linda to Nicaragua soon after the trip to Peru. In Nicaragua they all assisted in the efforts to build a shelter for battered women and orphaned children. They joined with a number of others from another baptist church in Americus Georgia. The foundation had already been laid and the walls were up, their main job was to put on the roof. They put on the roof and hooked up the lights. Some of the children came to see the progress of their new home and ran right to what would be their rooms. They were overjoyed! The trip was tough, no air conditioning and the work was hard but at the end of the trip, they were glad they went.
Greg challenged those of us there to really think about going on a mission trip, helping out those in need and gaining much more personally then you would ever expect to give.
